Traditional candlestick charts display volume on the horizontal time axis—showing how much trading occurred within a specific hour, day, or week. While helpful, time-based volume fails to answer a far more consequential question: At what price level did the most business actually take place?

This is where Volume Profile transforms consolidation analysis. By plotting volume horizontally across price tiers, analysts can clearly see the distribution of transaction volume throughout the lifespan of a sideways channel.

Key Volume Profile Milestones in Sideways Ranges

When applying a fixed-range volume profile to a consolidation channel, three core benchmark levels immediately stand out:

• Point of Control (POC): The exact price level where the highest volume was transacted. In a balanced consolidation, the POC acts as a powerful gravitational magnet that pulls price back whenever it deviates too far without conviction.
• Value Area High (VAH): The upper boundary of the price region encompassing 70% of all traded volume within the range.
• Value Area Low (VAL): The lower boundary encompassing that same 70% volume cluster.

Using Value Areas for Mean Reversion and Breakout Confirmation

When price approaches the Value Area High or Low while remaining inside the broader macro structure, volume typically dries up at the extremes. This creates favorable risk-to-reward mean-reversion opportunities back toward the POC.

Conversely, when price punches outside the Value Area and begins establishing acceptance (multiple candle closes accompanied by rising volume outside VAH or VAL), the market has shifted from a state of balance into price discovery.
